AWB access for disambiguating

BD2412, I'm willing to give you AWB access for disambiguating. We certainly need a lot of that done. Before giving you the access, though, I need to make sure you understand a couple of things about how this Wikipedia works that are different from English Wikipedia.

First, I assume that you would be doing a large number of edits at a time. We have people (including me) who regularly monitor Special:RecentChanges to see what has changed. We're small enough that it's possible to do that effectively, but mass edits make that difficult and interfere with one of the primary ways we find vandalism. When someone wants to do a lot of non-controversial edits (more than a hundred or so changes of the same kind within a short period of time), an administrator can give them the flood flag to prevent those changes from showing up under Recent Changes. You would ask the admins to set that flag for you each time, then let them know when you finish so they can remove it. While you have the flood flag, you should only do the kind of changes that it was granted for.

The other thing is that, as you saw, there's resistance to giving AWB access here. The access would be given only for the purpose you requested, disambiguating. If it's used for anything else without approval, the access would be taken away again.

So what I'd want from you is agreement that:

 1. You would use AWB only for disambiguating
 2. You would use AWB only when an admin has given you the flood flag (unless you have only a small number of changes to do)

Is that acceptable? Any questions? --Auntof6 (talk) 23:23, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

That is fine with me, although I would like to know what you consider a small number of changes. Model has about 100 incoming links, which I can knock out in five minutes with AWB. BD2412 (talk) 23:52, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
The guideline I was given is about 100. I would say go ahead and do the ones for Model without the flood flag, if that's all you want to do right now. I just gave you AWB access. Thanks for wanting to help with the disambiguating! --Auntof6 (talk) 00:04, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Good rule of thumb is, if the number you are doing would fill the first page of Special:RecentChanges then you shouldn't be doing it without the flood flag because we are trying to avoid that page being filled and people missing vandalism. -DJSasso (talk) 17:22, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
The size of "the first page" depends on each user's individual settings. That, I think, is why I was told a specific number way back when. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:36, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
That is true, I was thinking in terms of the default (50) since I haven't changed it myself and totally forgot you could change it. Either way the purpose of the flood flag is to avoid filling the recent changes of users...so if you think it would fill the recent edits page of the average user then you should grab the flag. 100 is an ok number too, I was just trying to bring up the spirit of the idea. :) -DJSasso (talk) 17:42, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm fine with a limit of 50. BD2412 (talk) 19:53, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Can AWB disambiguate more than one thing at a time, or are you doing that?

I see that some of your AWB changes are disambiguating multiple things. Is AWB doing that, or are you doing it manually? If AWB can do it, I'd love to know how.

By the way, I see you disambiguated keyboardist to keyboardist. If you can manage it without too much trouble, keyboardist would be a better choice for those.

Thanks again for helping with our disambiguation backlog! --Auntof6 (talk) 00:32, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

I have an AWB script that I have put together over years of use which fixes most of the common issues. Changing the fix for Keyboard is no problem. Cheers! BD2412 (talk) 00:35, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Ah, I see how it could be done that way -- thanks! Did you have to do much customizing of your script to account for the differences here? Not all the article names are the same, for example. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm pulling out the incompatible fixes as I come across them. For example, Pilot is a disambiguation page on en.wikipedia, but an article here. BD2412 (talk) 00:39, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Done, and I finished the handful for Bass for good measure. About two dozen links to "model" are for meanings that have no article here, so I left those unchanged for now. Cheers! BD2412 (talk) 00:52, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! When you want to do more, if it's going to be more than about 100, just leave a message at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard, or possibly on the user page of an admin who seems to be online at the time, so they can give you the flood flag. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:57, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
I'll keep the batches smaller than that. Probably a dozen at a time. Cheers! BD2412 (talk) 16:55, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
