Did you know? (DYK) entries are interesting facts that not many people may know. On this page possible entries are listed and members of the DYK project assess the nominations for the DYK section. DYKs are listed on the Main Page.

How to enter a DYK

List articles on this page under the Nominations area, below. The newest nominations go at the top. If you would like to make a nomination, you should read the rules below.

If there is a picture that you would like to see used with your nomination, please add it with your nomination as shown below. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion.

{{Wikipedia:Did you know}}

Please use one of the following templates when reviewing nominations.

Symbol Code Ready for DYK? Description
18px {{DYKyes}} Yes No problems, ready for DYK
18px {{DYKagf}} Yes, WP:AGF Hook cited to a source not on the Internet, but to a reliable publication.
18px {{DYKfixed}} Yes, issue fixed. The issue preventing DYK, or request for improvement has now been fixed.
18px {{DYKalmost}} Almost Article is on the way to being ready for DYK, but the reviewer has questions.
18px {{DYKno}} No Article is unable to be used on DYK, the time limit has passed, or there are larger reservations.

Please add new nominations below with newer nominations at the top. Nominations should be headed with a ===Level Three=== header containing a link to the article that the hook is from. If possible, all hooks should contain a relevant file from Wikimedia Commons – this can be a picture or a sound. The subject article should be '''bolded'''.

Jeanne Calment

Soumya-8974 (talk) 05:54, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

18px I think a slight wording change would make this more interesting. How about "...that Jeanne Calment reached the age of 122?" The original way puts more emphasis on the fact that she died than on the age she reached. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:30, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Suzan DelBene

This is not my main wki, so please use {{ping|DannyS712}} if you reply so that I know. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 08:11, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
18px Template:Ping Doesn't seem very interesting. Many politicians have other jobs before getting into politics. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:39, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
Template:Ping its not very interesting, but given how stale the DYK on the main page has been I think its better than nothing --DannyS712 (talk) 22:57, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
Template:Ping I guess that's one way of looking at it. I'm not in favor of lowering our standards, though, plus there are several more proposed hooks here that may get approved soon. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:59, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
Template:Ping alt1 proposed below. --DannyS712 (talk) 21:15, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
18px That one sounds good. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:44, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Andaman Islands

Hook doesn't seem supported by the reference. It also isn't clear how it's interesting. Does Aruba usually get more tourists? Are the numbers for 2010 anomalous in some way? --Auntof6 (talk) 03:23, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Template:Ping How isn't it supported by the reference? The Government of India website shows the number of visitors in 2010, and the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism site shows the number of visitors in Aruba. This is interesting, because Aruba is more well-known than the Andaman Islands (See Google Trends). I used 2010, because that is what the GoI site says. ⇒ Lucie Person (talk) 01:46, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Only the first of those references is in the article. That reference doesn't mention Aruba, and doesn't show a figure of 200,000. I understand your point of why the hook interesting, but the article doesn't mention anything about Aruba, either. The hook and the reason for it being interesting have to be apparent in the article. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:03, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Vaginal tumors

18px This might be more interesting if it were tumors in general. Is it of special interest for vaginal ones? Also, hook is not supported by a reference. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:59, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

  • ...that Nairobi is the only city in the world that has a National Park inside it? --DJ ( - ) 08:39, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
18px Hook is not in the article. If added, it must be sourced. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:56, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Your Name

Interesting hook, reliable source, simple enough, but would it be possible to get rid of the many red links that the articles has? While not a hard requirement, the point of DYK is to showcase articles that users wouldn't usually read. If they're interested and want to keep reading about a similar topic presented in the article, it'd be helpful to have those blue links. --Eurodyne (talk) 07:29, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
I'll try my best to get rid of the red links, but that's a lot of red links; considering how slow I am in terms of content creation, it might take a year or so. hiàn 17:35, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
It's not required to get rid of red article links. I'd say yes on this if it's still true (over a year has gone by since the reference for this hook was published). --Auntof6 (talk) 07:03, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
The hook does appear to still be true (and looking at the numbers, it doesn't appear it will change anytime soon). On another note, I do concede I haven't been the most dedicated at reducing the red links here. Hiàn (talk) 16:58, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Cracked nipples

File:Breastfeeding infant.jpg
Breastfeeding infant

...that mothers with cracked nipples often find that breastfeeding is so painful that they stop breastfeeding?

18px A few issues:

  • It's not clear if the fact in the hook is referenced.
  • Broken code in the bibliography section
  • Nonexistent template used in many references
  • All categories are redlinked. Even if they were blue, however, one is redundant (Category:Breast) and one may be incorrect (I don't think cracked nipples is a disease).
  • The image shown here does not illustrate the article's subject. This is not a big problem, because an image is not required with every hook.

--Auntof6 (talk) 14:51, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

I will work on the article and make it better. I will fix all the problems that you list above. Thank you for the feedback. Best Regards, Barbara (talk) 02:46, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

...that Pokémon is short for "Pocket Monsters"? Exotic Cow (talk) 00:12, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

  • 18px Does not contain a cited source and is therefore not ready for DYK at this time. eurodyne (talk) 05:54, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
  • In fact, I don't see this hook in the article at all. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:55, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

A&W Restaurants

  • ...That American fast food restaurant A&W also exists in Canada, however it is owned by a different company?
    • 18px At 539 characters, this is too short for a DYK article. Only (talk) 02:43, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
Woops. I'll try to expand it when I get a minute, lots of content can be added. Thanks. --Gordonrox24 | Talk 02:30, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
Expanded article and removed several new redlinks.--Tbennert (talk) 20:35, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Sidney Nolan

File:Portrait of Sidney Nolan.jpg
Portrait of Sidney Nolan
  • ...that Australian artist Sidney Nolan created over 10,000 individual art works? --Tbennert (talk) 16:27, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
18px Do we know how this compares to other artists? Ten thousand might not be unusual over the lifetime of a full-time artist. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:01, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
I don't know how it compares. I have added a line about Nolan being a prolific artist along with several sources.
It is way, way unusual unless a process of duplication is used (as in editions of a print). Nolan did use mechanical reproduction, so there is no limit to the number he produced. Many artists use limited editions to get over this issue, and so purchasers know that the value of their copy will not be continuously devalued. Unless there is some record (he might have kept a diary or notebook) the 10,000 number can never be verified. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:41, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

    Chili pepper

    • ... that "chile" is the most common Spanish spelling for the chili pepper in Mexico and several other Latin American countries?

    Source is here.[1]

    Qwertyxp2000 (talk | changes) 05:09, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

18px First, this is not that interesting. Second, since those countries are Spanish-speaking and chile is the way to spell it in Spanish, it's not saying much to say that it's the most common way to spell it there. Also, I haven't counted, but the page seems like it might be too short. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:34, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

    British Empire

    • ... that the British Empire once controlled a quarter of the world's land area?

    Holding area

Hooks that are ready to be moved to a queue for update may be held in this area until a space in a queue comes available. To be eligible to move into this area, a queue must meet all of the promotion guidelines as outlined above. Hooks in this area do not count towards a user's nomination limit. If you change or re-review a hook in this area, it must be moved back to the main nominations section for discussion to continue. The only changes permitted here are formatting or spelling changes, or adding an associated file.

    Factual error

{*mp}}... that Chicago is the largest city in the United States to have had a female mayor since 2012?

    should read

{*mp}}... that as of 2012 Chicago was the largest city in the United States to have had a female mayor? SashiRolls (talk) 01:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Template:Ping User:SashiRolls appears to be correct. Can you address this? (I would, but I'm not familiar with where the queues are.) Unless the hook is still true as of now, I think we should just remove the item: things that were true in the past but now aren't are not interesting as hooks. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:19, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
We were due for an update so I put the next queue on the main page. Working now on the behind the scenes part. I think TDKR mentioned stepping back from wiki for a while. --Tbennert (talk) 16:37, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Does that old hook need to be removed so that it won't appear? (Showing my lack of knowledge about how it works!) --Auntof6 (talk) 17:26, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
